This type of muscle pain can affect anyone—from someone who's just starting to work out to elite athletes who are stepping up their training schedule.

Eccentric movements, which simultaneously contract and lengthen the muscles, can cause the worst symptoms of DOMS. Since many weightlifting exercises fall into this category (bicep curls, anyone?), you can understand why so many people find themselves groaning and moaning in the agony of DOMS.
