Materials from the University of Tokyo's General Library are now available via the Internet Archive
In today's world that is more networked than ever before, one might think that any aspect of human history is just a click away. However, language barriers and physical limitations remain major obstacles to deepening knowledge and understanding of foreign cultures, even on the Internet. That is why the Internet Archive is pleased to announce a new partnership with the University of Tokyo General Library . This joint project between the Internet Archive and the University of Tokyo General Library is led by Nakatake Seiya of the University of Tokyo Academic Asset Archiving Promotion Office, and aims to provide digital backups and expand access to the extremely valuable materials held by the University of Tokyo General Library.

Since June 2020, the Internet Archive's Collections of Tokyo Library staff to retrieve thousands of digital files from the library's servers and to organize metadata for over 4,000 priceless special database scrolls, manuscripts, and documents. The collection is the result of meticulous digitization work by Japanese historians and researchers, and it represents centuries of Japan's rich history in prose, verse, and images.

Particularly noteworthy materials include the Ogai Library , a collection of handwritten manuscripts and books with notes by Mori Ogai himself that were kept in his (1862-1922) personal library , an early copy of The Tale of Genji, and the Komeijohoji Ruisan, a compilation of bylaws (laws and precedents based on the emperor's decisions) from the mid-Ming dynasty in China (the collection is not known to be held anywhere else except by the museum).
